The Ruler’s Handbook.
A Ruler has a distinct amount of power in roleplay. Though, let me point out, that sometimes doesn't carry over to Out of Character items. All Rulers should read this. It says what you can and cannot do... and gives you pointers and tips.
1. What is a Ruler?
A Ruler is someone who rules over a fraction. A fraction is a pride, herd, or pack depending on the animal.
2. Who can be a Ruler?
If your character is at an adult then he or she may become a Ruler. Of course, factors such as the player's activity and literacy are kept in mind. Rulers must set an example for other members.
3. How do I become a Ruler?
A character can become a Ruler in a few different ways. Though in each way it is taken into account the player's activity and literacy. He can become a Ruler if he or she... (a) Is not a lion and manages to get a certain amount of people of his or her own breed together willing to follow his or her rule and if there is room for another fraction. (b) Fights the current Ruler [Males fight the Male Ruler, Females fight the Female Ruler] and wins. (c) Is born as the heir to their parent's Ruler and their parent's die. Lions can also create a pride they are automatically the Ruler of.
This is the only way to create a pride. If two characters want to make the pride together they can combine their influence. If a lion is already a Ruler he can not make another pride. Being a Ruler's mate does not guarantee you the position as Ruler.
4. What is the best way not to become a Ruler?
Best way not to become a Ruler is pretty simple. If you violate the rules often and seem to get into arguments with other members you can presume you won’t have the best of chances. Also, if your not active, you are defiantly not getting the part. Rulers are suppose to set an example. We want people who set a good example.
5. Can I lose my Rulership?
Yes you can. You can lose it if someone challenges for it and you don't win, or if you go inactive for more then ten days without valid warning. Also, if you break the rules numerous times during your rule you could lose it as well.
6. What can I do as a Ruler?
As a Ruler run your own Fraction. You can run it however you like with whatever rules [so long as they don't interfere with forum ones] you desire to have. You can start war or cause peace. You can lead your people to strife or bounty, it's up to you.
7. What must I do as a Ruler?
As a Ruler you must make your own, original Fraction name. No, you can not have the 'Sunset Pride' or the 'Water Lake Pride'. It must be a name. You also must have up relatively accurate statistics for your pride in the 'Fractions of Africa' section.
8. What is this stuff about land?
As you might know LOA has gone to a new system where there no longer is a great divide between Lion Pride Land and Lion Rogue Land. In this way we hoped to add interest, competition between prides, competition between prides and rogues, and realism. This stuff about land is pretty simple. The goal of most Rulers is to become the biggest and strongest, yes? And power is measured in two ways. How much land you have, and how many members you have. Those two are dependent on each other. The territories vary in how many members one needs to take it over and how many can live there. So! In the perfect situation you can just continue recruiting members and claiming more land... In the perfect situation. One must remember there are other prides out there that may want the same land. Thus conflict will begin. And now we have changed things once again.
9. When is it time for more land?
You must have enough members in your pride to gain more land. For example let us say your current land needs three lions to maintain it [Maintain: Have a decent grasp on it.] and it can only sustain seven [ lions. [Sustain: It can only have. Anymore and you'll start depleting your resources, thus hurting your pride in the long run.] Let's say your pride has ten lions. You'll now need more land, your pride has become too big for just that one territory.
1o. How do I get more land?
Once you need more land, you go out hunting for new land. There are two choices: Getting land that hasn't been claimed or trying to get land that someone else’s own. First, let us talk about option one. Option one is your going to claim land that isn't owned yet. What you would do is you would make sure you have enough lions [or hyenas] to acquire that land, to maintain it, to keep it under your rule. Using the example from 'When is it time for more land'... You have ten lions in your pride, and your first territory requires you have at least three. That means you can get a territory that has a Maintain Number of anywhere between one to seven. After you find one with a Maintain Number between one - seven what you do is your make a thread [with 'Claim' somewhere in the title] and roleplay out your claim. Now, if your going to try to take someone else's land things get a bit more complex. First, you want to find land in your "price range", once done you go ahead and post your Claim post. Now things can go down a few different ways. There can be a fight/mini-war [In which case you want to try to get all your members there] or the current possesor of the land can simply 'concede' and allow you to take it. If a the current Ruler of the land does not reply to your claim in a reasonable amount of time without due cause, then it is an 'auto' that he concedes. Of course he can always come back later and try to kick you out ;3
11. How do I lose land?
You can lose land if a larger, more powerful pride makes a move on your land. If you two get to fighting and they win, then the land is no longer yours. You can lose land if you simply give it up to avoid confrontation. You can also lose land if another predators move in and over run you. Another way is if your land "falls in active", or if you don't express your rule of it. Lets say none of your members has posted in that land for over two weeks. If that happens then your claim becomes invalid and the land is once more on the market. Also if your pride numbers fall to low, if you can not cover the 'Maintain Number' you will lose your land.
12. Any land that cannot be taken?
Yes, there is some land among the territories that can not be occupied by anyone but a certain pride. These lands are not up for grabs and are considered the 'Starting Home' of the pride. These territories can only be lost in the pride that occupies them decides to disband. Territories that cannot be taken are marked with a "Home of" instead of "Properity of".
