Serena's Family

Serena had been sleeping peacefully when the small cries of her cubs awakened her. She got up and stretched. Serena looked around her to see where independent Cole and shy little Tara had gone. About 5 feet away, she noticed the cubs wrestling with each other in the tall grass.

Tara let out a small cry when her brother pounced on her. "That hurt, Cole." She said accusingly to her brother. As soon as Cole turned his back, Tara took a running start and pounced as hard as she could. The small female cub knew that her brother would be angry with her, but Tara knew that she had to get him back.

Cole laughed at his sister. He loved playing with her because it made him feel bigger and stronger than he really was. Cole laughed as he turned away from his sister. As Tara pounced onto his back, he tried to roar inorder to scare her off, but all the came out was a small squeak.

Cursico hadn't yet felt the pains of hunger, but he felt terrible. His mother's death lay heavy in his heart. He needed a mother, a protector and a pride if he was to survive cub-hood. He scented to air, warily checking for Hyena's. He was overjoyed to smell cubs and an older lion, possibly the mother or an aunt.
Either way, this was a chance, he was painfully aware he was in another pride's territory, and the consequences of doing so.
He approached Serena, and stopped in view, waiting to be acknowledged or attacked, his body tensed for the latter. His round ears facing to Serena, trying to block out the sounds of the happy cubs.

Serena caught the scent of a newcomer. Quickly she gathered Tara and Cole close to her. As Serena scanned the area around her and her cubs. Her golden eyes settled on a lone cub not far from her. Carefully, Serena walked over to him slowly. As she approached the cub, she quietly asked him,Where did you come from? Serena was not one to approach newcomers, but she knew that she couldn't leave this cub alone.

Tara and Cole stayed close to their mother she approached the new cub. Both of them were nervous of also excited that they might have a new friend to play with. "I wonder what his name is." Tara whispered to her brother. "Wonder if he's any good at wrestling." Cole whispered back.

Cursico shivered as the lioness approached him, expecting an attack but standing his ground. "I come from a pride far off" He told her. Nervously awaiting what she would say, perhaps she didn't know he wasn't in her pride, and after being told she'd fall upon him like those other lions, he'd have to run again, losing precious strength then surely he'd die. He kept his eyes as pleading as possible, staying unthreatening and making himself as small as possible.

Serena was shocked that the small cub had traveled so far. Are you alone? She asked the cub, suddenly aware that the cub was not accompanied by a lioness. How did you make it all this way without someone to protect you? Serena could not believe that he had come so far, just a small cub, alone.

"Hi, I'm Cole." The brave little cub stepped out from behind his mother. "My sister's name is Tara, but she's to scared to come out." Tara was offened that her brother would say something like that. "I am not afraid, I just want to use my manners."

Serena glanced down at her cubs as they began quarreling. She softly brushed them with her paw. Serena then looked at the new cub in front of her and waited for him to answer.

Cursico sighed, shaking his head, having second thoughts about all this. "Never mind" He muttered, turning and running away. Sandy coloured tail flicking behind him, he didn't really need a mother that fast. Anyway, he could take his pick of all.
