A paw settled on the withered reeds and ground. Proud head held high and alert, the Queen surveyed the dried marshland with something akin to love. It was her home, and after what seemed like so long a time...she had returned. The thought filled her with joy and a sense of purpose. She knew some of the pride members would not return, but that did not mean the Akina could not start anew. The Lady of the Marsh had loved, and was then abandoned. She had struggled for the lives of her cubs, and only two of three survived. She fought tirelessly for her pride's protection, and they thrived. Kings had come and gone, yet she remained. The Queen knew loss, but she did not accept defeat. The Akina would rise again, and she would see to it. passage from [Tears In The Water]

She entered the lands and claimed them as her own, becoming the Lady of the Marsh. The pride grew slower than others, perhaps, but it was strong, resilient, and unique. So very unique. They saw three kings come and go and one nomadic male linger. They were a pride of ladies--strong women who could take care of themselves and their own without need of the protection of a king. They more than survived in this place of water and mud. A land that so many lions found distasteful they called their home. Where other prides avoided the dangers of the African Buffalo, the Akina took the challenge head on. They knew sorrow, and heartache, and loss, but these ladies were dedicated and persevered. But several years passed and a drought hit--the worse the marsh had seen in a long while. The water evaporated, the vegetation withered, and the prey moved on. The pride was starving and a decision had to be made--stay together and perish, or split up and hope smaller numbers would be able to sustain themselves. The pride disbanded and the Queen left with her daughters. Weeks passed, and she was forced to separate from them as well. The ladies of the Akina, once so strong, were divided. But time went on and though it was still the dry season, melted snow from the mountains made its way down, refreshing the marsh. Smaller creatures appeared once again, and the Queen knew it was time to return.

As their name suggests, the homeland of the Akina Pride is Kinamasi--a marshy area with all the mud, reedy grass, and water one would expect to find. Humans seldom went there, and when they did, it was only a quick passing through. Even now, lions tend to avoid the area--save for the few that have adapted to the strange conditions.

I. Obey the leaders and respect all.
II. The pride gives you loyalty and expects yours in turn. Betraying the pride can result in everything from a slap on the wrist to an order for execution.
III. You must gain the permission of the leaders to breed with those outside the pride. Inside the pride you are free, for they are of the pride.
IV. Never attack a fellow pride member. To do so results in immediate expulsion, if not death.
V. If you have a problem with anyone, whether of the pride or not, bring the issue to your leaders.
